WASHINGTON (Realist English). Former FBI Director James Comey has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of making false statements and obstructing a congressional proceeding, marking an extraordinary escalation in President Donald Trump’s long-standing push to pursue political adversaries.
The indictment stems from Comey’s September 30, 2020, testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee regarding an FBI leak probe. Prosecutors allege that Comey falsely denied authorizing an FBI official to act as an anonymous source in news reports. He faces up to five years in prison if convicted.
“JUSTICE IN AMERICA! One of the worst human beings this Country has ever been exposed to is James Comey,” Trump wrote on Truth Social following the indictment.
Comey responded in a video posted to Instagram: “Let’s have a trial. And keep the faith. My heart is broken for the Department of Justice but I have great confidence in the federal judicial system — and I’m innocent.”
Attorney General Pam Bondi underscored that “no one is above the law,” saying the case demonstrates the Justice Department’s commitment to accountability.
The charges were presented in the Eastern District of Virginia by Lindsey Halligan, Trump’s former personal attorney and now chief prosecutor in the district. A judge confirmed that 14 jurors voted in favor of indictment on the two counts, while declining a third charge.
Comey, who oversaw the FBI during the 2016 probe into Trump’s campaign and alleged Russian interference, has long been a central figure in the president’s grievances. The grand jury’s decision makes him the first senior official to face federal charges tied to those controversies.
Comey is scheduled to be arraigned in Alexandria, Virginia, on October 9.
