YEREVAN (Realist English). Armenia has endorsed a project to establish an international transport corridor for cargo shipments along the route Kazakhstan–Turkmenistan–Iran–Armenia, Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan said on Thursday during the 11th session of the Kazakh-Armenian Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation.
Grigoryan noted that freight operations are already running on the China–Kazakhstan–Uzbekistan–Turkmenistan–Iran–Armenia route, reflecting growing interest in strengthening regional logistics links. He added that shipments could become regular, particularly given Armenian businesses’ interest in using the Khorgos International Centre for Cross-Border Cooperation.
Kazakhstan’s co-chair of the commission, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Economy Serik Zhumangarin, emphasized the trade potential, saying: “According to our estimates, additional export opportunities to Armenia could reach $350 million, primarily through supplies of metallurgical, petrochemical, chemical and food products.”
Transport cooperation was a key focus of the meeting. Kazakhstan proposed granting Armenian airlines the right to operate direct flights with fifth freedom traffic rights under its “open skies” regime. The sides also discussed reducing airport fees in Yerevan to facilitate greater connectivity.
