U.S. envoy cites “substantial progress” after first day of Ukraine talks in Geneva

GENEVA (Realist English). U.S. President’s special envoy Stephen Witkoff said there had been “substantial progress” in efforts to reach a settlement in Ukraine after the first day of trilateral talks in Geneva.

In a post on X following the conclusion of Tuesday’s session, Witkoff said the United States had acted as a moderator in discussions between Ukraine and Russia. He described it as a success for the current U.S. administration that it had brought the two sides together, adding that the talks had produced meaningful forward movement.

“Both sides agreed to report back to their leaders and continue working toward a deal,” Witkoff wrote.

According to a source within the Russian negotiating team cited by TASS, participants agreed to resume contacts on Wednesday. The source described the first six-hour round of talks as “very tense.”

The negotiations, which began Tuesday in Geneva, mark a new round of direct trilateral engagement between Russia, the United States and Ukraine. The Russian delegation is led by presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky.

Further details of the agenda and specific proposals under discussion have not been publicly disclosed.
