From voice of support to figurehead: Pahlavi seeks to steer Iran’s uprising

BEIJING (Realist English). China is preparing a new round of upgrades for its J-20 stealth fighter, focusing on improved radar, avionics, engines and the integration of artificial intelligence, according to comments by a military analyst aired on state broadcaster CCTV.

Military commentator Zhang Xuefeng said the aircraft — known as the “Mighty Dragon” — is already operating in conjunction with other advanced platforms, including stealth attack drones and airborne early-warning aircraft, underscoring the People’s Liberation Army’s growing emphasis on integrated, network-centric air warfare.

The remarks come as the J-20 marks the 15th anniversary of its maiden flight, which took place in Chengdu on January 11, 2011. The fighter officially entered service with the PLA Air Force in March 2017 and has since become a central symbol of China’s military modernisation drive.

Designed by Chengdu Aircraft Corporation, the twin-engine, single-seat jet features a low-observable airframe, radar-absorbent materials and internal weapons bays. It is also capable of supersonic cruising and is equipped with advanced avionics intended to rival other fifth-generation fighters.

According to Zhang, the next phase of development will focus primarily on internal systems rather than airframe changes. Planned improvements include more capable radar and infrared search-and-track systems, upgrades to air-to-air missiles with longer ranges and stronger resistance to electronic interference, and continued refinement of indigenous engines.

Artificial intelligence is expected to play a growing role in sensor fusion, decision-support and coordination with unmanned platforms. Analysts say these upgrades are aimed at preserving the J-20’s combat relevance as aerial warfare increasingly shifts toward highly networked and automated operations.
