Trump says Maduro captured after US strike on Caracas

CARACAS (Realist English). The United States has carried out an unprecedented operation to seize Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro from the capital and transfer him out of the country, a move announced by Donald Trump in a brief social media post and already triggering intense debate over international law and regional stability.

According to US officials, the operation involved a covert overnight extraction from a heavily guarded location in Caracas, after which Maduro was flown to face charges in the United States. Washington has long accused the Venezuelan leader of narcotics trafficking and other crimes, placing a $50 million bounty on him, but this marks the first time a sitting head of state has been forcibly removed from office by US action in such a manner.

The White House framed the move as part of a broader campaign against transnational drug networks and authoritarian governance in the Western Hemisphere. Critics, however, argue that whatever the legal arguments cited by Washington, the detention of a serving president will inevitably be seen as a political act tied to long-standing US efforts to reshape Venezuela’s leadership.

For decades, successive US administrations have sought Maduro’s removal, citing regional security concerns, energy interests and democratic backsliding. Trump’s second term intensified that approach, presenting Maduro as a central figure in a regional narcotics network. Analysts note, however, that while Venezuela has served as a transit route for drugs, the largest cartels operate elsewhere in Latin America, raising questions about the selectivity of US military pressure.

Beyond the immediate shock, the operation has opened a period of deep uncertainty. It remains unclear who will assume power in Caracas, whether the country’s political system can stabilize quickly, or whether the move will provoke unrest or anti-American sentiment. Some Venezuelans may welcome the end of Maduro’s rule, which many blame for years of economic collapse, while others warn the country could slide into chaos without a clear transition plan.

For Trump, the capture of Maduro represents a dramatic assertion of US power and a personal political victory. Whether it ultimately strengthens US influence in the region or triggers longer-term instability will depend less on the operation itself than on what Washington does next.
