Patriarch Kirill delivers Christmas address at Moscow cathedral

MOSCOW (Realist English). Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia delivered his traditional Christmas address overnight on January 6–7, ahead of the Nativity liturgy at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. The message was broadcast live on Russia’s federal television channels.

In his address, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church stressed that Christmas is not merely a commemoration of events two millennia ago, but a testament that Christ “came into the world to remain with humanity.” According to Patriarch Kirill, Christ is present with believers through the Holy Spirit, His teaching, the commandments and the power of the Word, which he said is capable of transforming human life “from sin to holiness, from evil to good.”

The Patriarch devoted particular attention to the concept of happiness, noting that true happiness is not defined by wealth, social status or outward prosperity, but by the inner state of the soul. He said that even amid hardship, illness, war and personal trials, people can preserve inner peace if their hearts are grounded in faith in Christ.

Patriarch Kirill added that belief in Christ’s victory over evil should strengthen people in what he described as “conscious, healthy optimism.” By sharing in the Gospel teaching and following the commandments, he said, individuals enter a spiritual condition that forms the basis of genuine happiness.

Concluding his address, the Patriarch urged believers during the Christmas night to pray not only for their relatives and loved ones, but also for those with whom they have difficult relationships. He said divine grace has the power to transform even “the most hardened soul,” and described Christmas as a universal feast capable of changing both the course of human history and the life of each individual.

Patriarch Kirill wished the faithful strength in faith and spiritual growth, calling on them to absorb divine love to make their lives “deeper and brighter.” He concluded by blessing the Fatherland, the people of Russia and all believers, and extending Christmas greetings to all.
