NEW YORK (Realist English). Speaking to the heads of States and Governments gathered at the 77th session of the UN General Assembly on September 20, Secretary General Antonio Guterres listed numerous crises that humanity has recently faced: war, the catastrophic consequences of climate change, growing inequality and poverty, the threat of hunger in many regions of the world.
“We need actions in all directions. Let’s not be under any illusions: a storm is raging in the world… trust is crumbling. Inequality is growing sharply. Our planet is on fire. The Charter of the United Nations and the ideals it represents are under threat. People are suffering, and the most vulnerable suffer the most. We must act.” the Secretary General said.
The UN chief also attributed the consequences of misuse of new technologies to the number of potentially crisis situations for which humanity should be prepared. Recently, mankind has been using new technical solutions that are designed to change life for the better.
“Since I became Secretary General, a genome editing tool has been created, neurotechnologies — the connection of technology with the human nervous system — have gone from idea to approbation, cryptocurrencies and other applications of blockchain technology have become widespread.” he added.
Guterres is convinced that it is impossible to achieve results in all areas without overcoming geopolitical tensions:
“The reality is such that we live in a world where the logic of cooperation and dialogue is the only way forward. No single Power or group of countries can solve everything alone. No major global problem can be solved by a coalition of volunteers alone. We need a coalition of the whole world.”
