WASHINGTON (Realist English). The administration of President Joseph Biden has rejected almost 85% of applications from Afghans who want to enter the United States under a program that allows it to temporarily cancel immigration requirements.
According to The Hill, the White House processed only about 2.6 thousand applications from Afghans. Of these, 2,250 applicants were refused. The refugees tried to get to the United States through the humanitarian parole process.
In addition, an estimated more than 100,000 made vulnerable due to their ties to the U.S or its democracy efforts still reside in Afghanistan and have limited options for seeking safety in the U.S.
Immigrant rights advocates claim that the Biden administration has not fulfilled its promise to help Afghans who remained in their country after the hasty withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan in August 2021 after the Taliban’s rapid seizure of power.
According to the UN, due to the American occupation of Afghanistan, millions of children do not go to school, 80% of Afghans do not have access to clean water, and half of the population is experiencing acute food shortages. On top of that, there is the largest drought in Afghanistan in the last 20 years, which has further aggravated food problems and put about nine million people on the verge of starvation.
