China and Japan trade protests over airspace and maritime clash near disputed islets

BEIJING (Realist English). Tensions between China and Japan escalated this weekend after a new confrontation near the disputed Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea. On Saturday morning, China’s coast guard claimed that a Japanese civilian aircraft “illegally” entered the airspace over one of the islands during a routine Chinese patrol.

According to Beijing, the plane exited the area five minutes later after a Chinese helicopter was dispatched to “warn and expel” the intruder. In response, Chinese Ambassador to Japan Wu Jianghao issued a formal protest, calling on Tokyo to prevent further incidents. “China strongly condemns and firmly opposes such violations. If Japan continues its provocations, Beijing will take countermeasures to defend its sovereignty and maritime rights,” he warned.

Japan’s Foreign Ministry quickly responded with a protest note of its own, accusing four Chinese coast guard vessels of entering Japanese territorial waters in the same area that day.

The Senkaku Islands — known in China as Diaoyu — have been at the center of a long-standing territorial dispute since the 1970s. While Japan maintains administrative control, China asserts historical claims and regularly dispatches patrol ships and aircraft to the vicinity.

Amid deepening strategic ties between Beijing and Moscow, and growing U.S.-Japan military cooperation, such incidents are becoming more frequent and more dangerous. Without reliable de-escalation channels between military commands, an aerial or maritime collision may be only a matter of time.
