UK threatens to recognize Palestinian state in September unless Israel acts on Gaza

LONDON (Realist English). The United Kingdom will move to formally recognize a Palestinian state in September unless Israel takes immediate and concrete steps to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Downing Street announced on Tuesday.

In an official statement, the British government reaffirmed its commitment to a two-state solution, saying it was “determined to protect its viability.” It warned that unless the Israeli government initiates substantial action to end the “appalling situation in Gaza” and demonstrates a commitment to long-term peace, the UK will proceed with recognition of Palestine ahead of the next session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The conditions outlined by Downing Street include:

  • Immediate authorization for the UN to resume humanitarian aid operations in Gaza to prevent further starvation
  • An agreed ceasefire to end hostilities
  • A clear Israeli commitment not to annex further territories in the West Bank

The announcement followed a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who earlier described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as “revolting”.

This marks the strongest signal yet from London that it is prepared to unilaterally recognize Palestine, aligning with moves by several other European states and amplifying pressure on Israel amid growing international condemnation of the Gaza offensive.
