MOSCOW (Realist English). Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Orthodox Christians and all citizens celebrating Christmas, in a message published overnight on January 7, 2026.

In his address, Putin underscored the spiritual meaning of the holiday, saying that Christmas “illuminates the world with the light of goodness and love,” offers hope, and strengthens the bond between generations through enduring spiritual values. He separately highlighted what he called the “truly unique contribution” of the Russian Orthodox Church and other Christian denominations to preserving historical and cultural heritage, fostering patriotic and moral education among young people, and promoting interfaith and interethnic dialogue.

The president noted that religious organizations are actively engaged in charitable work, providing assistance to those in need and offering support to participants and veterans of Russia’s special military operation. He said this work заслуживает “the most sincere recognition.”

On Christmas night, Putin attended a service at the Church of St. George the Victorious in the Moscow region. After the liturgy, he spoke with parishioners, including children, and emphasized the special place of Russian soldiers in the country’s history.

In remarks following the service, the president said that Russia traditionally views defenders of the Fatherland as people fulfilling a “sacred mission” — the protection of the country and its people. He also noted that the joy of Christmas is shared by representatives of different faiths, adding that “victory is always one for all.”

Concluding his message, Putin поздравил those present with Christmas and the New Year, wished them good fortune and the protection of a guardian angel, and thanked service members for their service to the country.
