MOSCOW (Realist English). Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump held a phone conversation on Monday evening to discuss the escalating conflict involving Iran and ongoing diplomatic efforts related to Ukraine, according to Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov.
Ushakov said Trump initiated the call to address several major international issues as tensions continue to reshape global security and energy markets.
The discussion focused primarily on the conflict around Iran as well as the three-party negotiations involving US representatives aimed at finding a settlement to the war in Ukraine.
According to the Kremlin, the conversation lasted about one hour and was described as “businesslike, frank and constructive.” It marked the first phone call between the two leaders since late December 2025.
During the conversation, both presidents agreed that direct dialogue should continue on a regular basis.
Putin presented several proposals aimed at achieving a political and diplomatic settlement of the Iran conflict. Ushakov said these proposals were informed by Russia’s recent contacts with leaders of Gulf states, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and other international partners.
Trump shared Washington’s assessment of the ongoing US-Israeli military campaign against Iran. Ushakov said the two leaders exchanged views in what he described as a detailed discussion of the situation.
The US president also reiterated his interest in bringing the war in Ukraine to an end and achieving a ceasefire that could open the path toward a longer-term settlement.
Russia, in turn, expressed a positive assessment of mediation efforts undertaken by Trump and his team.
Ushakov added that Putin informed Trump about the situation along the front line in Ukraine, saying Russian forces were making significant advances and that this should encourage Kyiv to move toward negotiations.
The two leaders also discussed developments in Venezuela, particularly in relation to the global oil market.
According to the Kremlin, the conversation covered a wide range of international issues and is expected to have practical significance for further cooperation between Russia and the United States on several areas of global policy.
