LONDON (Realist English). European Union’s solidarity towards the Ukrainians displaced as a result of the crisis shows the deeply politicized and often discriminatory nature of providing protection to refugees. Emily Venturi and Anna Iasmi Vallianatou, Academy Associates of the British analytical center Chatham House, write about this.
“The painful contrast exposes the double standards in the EU’s approach to refugees. With Europe’s grim history of restrictive asylum policies, it is wishful thinking that the warm welcome to Ukrainians will extend to all asylum-seekers. The EU solidarity to displaced Ukrainians illustrates the deeply politicized – and often discriminatory – nature of providing refugee protection.” they point out.
According to Chatham House experts, the EU countries will try to use the situation with Ukrainian refugees as an excuse not to accept refugees from other countries.
“Fighting disinformation and countering nationalism and xenophobia are crucial to ensure the longevity of the EU refugee response, and to start repairing the discriminatory nature of Europe’s approach to asylum. And any double standard also harms EU citizens and the rule of law, spilling over from asylum into other policy fields – so Europe must rethink how it treats all people seeking protection.” analysts of Chatham House emphasized.
According to the UN, since the beginning of the Russian special operation, almost 3.9 million residents have left the Ukraine, a country with a population of 44 million. Poland has hosted more than two million of them. Over 270 thousand refugees have been registered in Germany.
