YEREVAN (Realist English). According to the “Hunger Map” of the UN World Food Program, 500 thousand people in Armenia are malnourished.
About 4.4% of children under the age of 5 in the country suffer from acute malnutrition, and 9.4% from chronic malnutrition.
At the same time, the population of Armenia is estimated by UN experts at 3 million.
It is specified that over the past month the number of people suffering from malnutrition has increased by 10 thousand people.
“What can I say here? This is a verdict for the entire ruling class of Armenia — both present and former! Shame and embarrassment. Shame and embarrassment, especially against the backdrop of lush Armenian feasts and crowded restaurants and cafes.
We need a new algorithm for the distribution of material wealth in society! An algorithm that should work in favor of the majority of the Armenian people, and not a bunch of oligarchs who have grown together with the state in a tangle of hypocrisy, lies and greed,” Realist News Agency editor—in-chief Sarkis Tsaturyan believes.
According to the Macrotrends, people who can spend no more than $5.5 per day on themselves are considered poor. Thus, the poverty level in Armenia for 2020 was 44.70%, which is 0.7% more than in 2019. For comparison: in 2017, the poverty rate was 41.50%. This is 4% more than in 2016.
Based on the principle of the Macrotrends, poverty in Armenia is higher than in Colombia (38.3%) and Peru (32.9%).
