Trump reveals ‘tough talk’ with Zelensky, promises upcoming meeting with Putin

U.S. president says only his involvement can lead to a deal between Russia and the Kyiv regime: "Putin is tired and wants to look good".

WASHINGTON (Realist English). In a televised interview with Fox News, U.S. President Donald Trump said he had a “very tough conversation” with Vladimir Zelensky, head of the Kyiv regime, and expressed confidence that a personal meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin would take place soon.

“Listen, I had a very tough talk with Zelensky because I didn’t like what he said, and he wasn’t making things any easier,” Trump said. “I’ve always said he has no cards — and he really doesn’t. He’s up against a massive army.”

Trump added that Putin is already at the table and ready to negotiate:

“He wanted this meeting. I think he’s tired of all this. He doesn’t look good — and he wants to look good.
I’ve always believed there won’t be a meeting without me, because I don’t think a deal can be done without me. There’s too much hatred on both sides.”

The U.S. president noted that he maintains a “very good relationship with Putin” and is focused on a tangible outcome:

“I think we’ll make a deal. We need to meet — and I think we’ll probably schedule that.”

Trump did not rule out strengthening anti-Russian sanctions if necessary but emphasized a preference for diplomacy:

“If we have to, we’ll toughen sanctions. But I’d rather not. It’s better to get peace than to keep escalating.”

Trump’s remarks came shortly after the first direct meeting since 2022 between Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Istanbul. Moscow previously confirmed that the Kyiv regime requested direct talks between Zelensky and Putin, though the Kremlin has not publicly commented on the proposal.

Trump is reasserting his personal monopoly on the “grand bargain.” By distancing himself from the Kyiv regime’s leadership, he is clearing space for a new phase of negotiations based on strength. His approach is not about mediation — it’s about intervention. If a meeting with Putin takes place, it could mark the beginning of a reset in U.S.-Russia relations — and potentially a new configuration for resolving the conflict in the former territory of Ukraine.
