Iran warns talks would be meaningless if Europe reimposes UN sanctions

NEW YORK (Realist English). Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has warned that diplomatic dialogue will become meaningless if European powers move ahead with reimposing United Nations sanctions through the so-called snapback mechanism.

Speaking Thursday in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, during a meeting with Bolivian President Luis Arce Catacora, Pezeshkian said Iran hoped the measure would not be triggered but emphasized that Tehran was prepared for every scenario.

“We hope the snapback mechanism will not be triggered, but if it is, Iran’s interaction with the international community will be proportional to the new situation,” he stated.

On August 28, Britain, France and Germany formally notified the UN Security Council that they were activating the snapback clause of the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA), alleging Iranian non-compliance. The move set in motion a 30-day countdown for the return of all UN sanctions unless a new agreement is reached. A draft resolution to permanently lift the nuclear-related measures was rejected by the Security Council last week.

Pezeshkian denounced Washington’s unilateral policies, saying they undermine not only Iran but any nation that resists U.S. pressure. “Countries seeking independence must enhance their scientific and technical capabilities to safeguard sovereignty and national interests,” he said.

He reiterated that renewed sanctions would eliminate the basis for dialogue: “Diplomatic negotiations will have no meaning if the European troika reinstates the sanctions against Tehran.”

The Iranian leader also praised Bolivia’s cooperation with Iran over the years, noting that future relations depend on the determination of both governments. Arce, for his part, condemned U.S. “warmongering policies,” particularly in the Caribbean, and described Iran’s presence in Latin America as constructive. He voiced Bolivia’s interest in expanding ties with Tehran across multiple sectors.
