MOSCOW (Realist English). Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said negotiations between the United States and Iran had been merely a “cover operation,” following the launch of a joint US-Israeli military campaign against Tehran.
“All negotiations with Iran were a cover operation. No one had any doubts about that. No one seriously intended to reach an agreement,” Medvedev wrote on his channel in the Max messaging platform.
His comments came after Israel carried out what it described as preemptive strikes against Iran on February 28. US President Donald Trump confirmed that American forces were participating in the operation.
A third round of talks between US and Iranian officials had taken place in Geneva on February 26, just two days before the strikes.
Following the Israeli attack, the Israeli military reported missile launches from Iranian territory toward Israel, signaling a rapid escalation of hostilities.
Medvedev’s statement reflects Moscow’s broader criticism of Western diplomatic efforts surrounding Iran’s nuclear program and underscores Russia’s view that recent negotiations were not conducted in good faith.
The developments mark a sharp deterioration in regional stability and raise further questions about the future of diplomatic engagement over Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
