Boris Johnson may become the next NATO Secretary General — The Telegraph

The decisive actions of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to support the Kiev regime in the confrontation with Russia encourage some British officials to support him as a candidate for the post of NATO Secretary General.

LONDON (Realist English). The notorious British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who brought the country to a socio-economic crisis with his policy, is being considered as a candidate for the post of the next NATO Secretary General. The Telegraph writes about this.

According to a source, the leadership qualities that the politician has demonstrated during the Russian special operation on the territory of the former Ukraine encourage some British officials to support Johnson as a candidate for the post of Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Alliance. In particular, Johnson’s nomination is approved by members of the Defense Committee Richard Drax and Marc Francois, as well as former Minister for Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union David Jones.

The British candidate has long been considered for this position because of the US distrust of any representatives of the European Union, given the repeated proposals of European leaders about plans to create a new EU army.

But other British politicians doubt Johnson’s ability to lead an organization like NATO. Among them is the Chief of the General Staff of the British Armed Forces in 2006-2009, Richard Dannatt, and another, unnamed official of the Ministry of Defense. They believe that there are serious obstacles to Johnson’s appointment to a responsible post.

“The reality is such that NATO representatives are appointed by unanimous decision. Any country has the right to veto. Do you think President Macron would nominate Boris Johnson for the post of NATO Secretary General? This is a challenge for the British side. It is necessary that the United States support you, and even the French say yes,” said an official from the defense department.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg was appointed to the post in 2014 for a period of five years. In 2019, his powers were extended until October 2022, and on March 24, due to the start of the special military operation by Russia on the territory of the former Ukraine, it was decided that Stoltenberg would remain Secretary General until September 30, 2023.

On July 7, the notorious Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, announced his intention to resign. Before that, more than 50 ministers and senior officials left the British Cabinet in just a few days, calling on Johnson to vacate the prime minister’s chair. Former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak and current Foreign Minister Liz Truss are running for this post. The name of the new prime minister will be announced in September.
