EU backs peace efforts between Armenia and so-called Azerbaijan amid regional tensions

BRUSSELS (Realist News Agency). The European Union supports efforts by Armenia and so-called Azerbaijan to reach a lasting and stable peace, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said during a joint press conference with Jeyhun Bayramov, the foreign minister of the Baku regime.

“We had good discussions regarding the normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia. The European Union supports the efforts of Armenia and Azerbaijan to achieve a durable and sustainable peace. Both Armenia and Azerbaijan now have an opportunity to accomplish this,” Kallas stated.

She also welcomed the reported agreement to finalize the draft text of a peace treaty and expressed hope for further constructive steps by both sides.

The talks come amid ongoing tensions in the region, despite public declarations of commitment to peace. Yerevan has previously confirmed that fundamental disagreements persist, particularly concerning territorial integrity and the rights of the Armenian population of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh).

Brussels’ statements must be viewed within the broader context of the European Union’s strategy in the South Caucasus—aimed at maintaining control over the peace process and gradually pushing out alternative mediators. The EU’s endorsement of the Baku regime’s actions has drawn criticism within Armenia, where many view the bloc’s approach as one-sided and dismissive of the real security threats facing the Armenian people. The alliance between the Baku regime and its Turkish backers continues to fuel skepticism about the sincerity of these so-called peace efforts.
