Strikes on Iran would be a disaster for the Caucasus and Middle East

YEREVAN (Realist English). U.S. and Israeli plans to launch airstrikes against Iran are a “foolish move akin to attacking a tank with an axe”, Sarkis Tsaturyan, an Armenian political figure and founder of the Ashkharazhokhov movement, warned in a statement on social media.

While such an attack may appear impressive on the surface, Tsaturyan said, it lacks both strategic logic and any real chance of success. In his words, “politicians who’ve clung to power since the Ice Age are prone to catastrophic miscalculations.” He singled out Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, suggesting his decisions could have grave consequences for millions across the South Caucasus and the Middle East.

Tsaturyan emphasized that Iran is already in a state of strategic mobilization. “Once the genie is out of the bottle, it can’t be forced back in,” he wrote. “I say this as an Armenian citizen living at the epicenter of the coming explosion — in Armenia.”

Armenia sits in a precarious geopolitical position, wedged between Iran, Turkey, Russia, and the West. A military escalation could impact critical transport routes, energy infrastructure, and regional security arrangements, including the CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organization).

Any direct conflict between Israel and Iran risks spiraling beyond a bilateral confrontation. A strike would likely empower radical actors, disrupt the regional balance of power, and drag previously neutral countries into a wider conflagration. Armenia, Tsaturyan warned, could become a hostage in a war not of its own making.

The warning reflects growing fears in Yerevan and other regional capitals that a strike on Iran would trigger a chain reaction across fault lines already under strain — from the fragile Armenian–Azerbaijani ceasefire to Iran’s volatile border provinces. The Caucasus, long at the crossroads of empires, may once again become a frontline.
