TEHRAN (Realist English). Iran will be temporarily governed by a leadership council composed of the president, the head of the judiciary and a member of the Guardian Council following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to Iran’s state news agency IRNA.
Citing First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber, IRNA reported that President Masoud Pezeshkian, the judiciary chief and one representative from the Guardian Council will assume interim authority over the country.
Khamenei was killed on February 28 in a joint US-Israeli airstrike on Tehran. Iranian authorities officially confirmed his death overnight.
Earlier, IRNA also confirmed the deaths of several senior figures close to the supreme leader, including Ali Shamkhani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Defense Council and a key adviser to Khamenei, as well as Mohammad Pakpour, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Under Iran’s constitutional framework, an interim leadership arrangement is expected to operate until the Assembly of Experts convenes to select a new supreme leader. The transition comes amid heightened regional tensions and significant losses within Iran’s political and military leadership.
