KATHMANDU (Realist English). When Nepal’s historic Singha Durbar palace caught fire last week, protesters draped its golden gates with a black flag featuring a grinning skull in a straw hat. The symbol came not from political history but from One Piece, a Japanese manga beloved by Generation Z.
The image, originally the pirate flag of Monkey D. Luffy’s crew in Eiichiro Oda’s long-running series, has become a rallying emblem for young demonstrators. In Nepal, where unrest forced the prime minister to resign after days of violent protests, activists said the banner represented determination and defiance. “We wanted the movement to feel like a Gen Z movement,” organizer Bikhyat Khatri explained.
The One Piece flag has appeared before in Indonesia, the Philippines, and even Paris. Analysts say its appeal lies in the narrative of Luffy’s fearless fight against an oppressive world government — a story line that resonates across borders. Andrea Horbinski, a historian of Japanese media, said protesters see in him “a cheerful determination to pursue justice despite setbacks.”
Symbols from pop culture often migrate into political movements: Hong Kong’s demonstrators once adopted Pepe the Frog, while activists in Thailand and Myanmar use the three-finger salute from The Hunger Games. In each case, recognizable imagery helps unify crowds and communicate across languages, according to scholars such as Natalie Pang of the National University of Singapore.
In Nepal, the flag flew beside slogans including “Gen Z won’t be silent” and “Your luxury, our misery.” In Indonesia, authorities seized similar banners ahead of independence celebrations, drawing condemnation from Amnesty International. Local artist Kemas Muhammad Firdaus told Reuters his mural of the Straw Hat Jolly Roger was “a symbol of warning for the government” and a call for officials to heed public grievances.
For many young protesters, the fictional pirate’s emblem has become a powerful shorthand: a playful image that carries serious demands for change.
