MOSCOW (Realist English). On July 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin held a detailed phone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron, addressing the escalating confrontation between Iran and Israel as well as the situation around Ukraine.
Both leaders expressed concern over the recent U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and emphasized their shared responsibility as permanent members of the UN Security Council in maintaining global peace and security. Putin and Macron stressed the importance of upholding the global nuclear non-proliferation regime and affirmed Tehran’s legitimate right to pursue peaceful nuclear development within the framework of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). They agreed that all crises in the Middle East, including the Iranian nuclear issue, must be resolved through political and diplomatic means. Further dialogue between Moscow and Paris was agreed to in order to potentially align their positions.
Regarding Ukraine, Putin reiterated that the conflict is a direct result of Western policies that ignored Russia’s security interests and supported the creation of an anti-Russian stronghold on Ukrainian territory. He accused Western powers of fueling hostilities by continuing to supply the Kiev regime with advanced weapons.
Putin reaffirmed Russia’s stance that any peace agreement must be comprehensive and long-term, address the root causes of the Ukrainian crisis, and reflect the new territorial realities on the ground.
The Kremlin said the exchange between the two presidents was constructive and substantive.
