LOS ANGELES (Realist English). Actor and martial artist Chuck Norris, known for his roles in 1980s action films and the television series Walker, Texas Ranger, has died at the age of 86, his family announced in a statement.

“It is with heavy hearts that our family shares the sudden passing of our beloved Chuck Norris,” the family said in a post on Instagram, adding that he died surrounded by relatives.

The family did not disclose the cause of death. According to Variety, Norris had been hospitalised in Hawaii shortly before his death.

Career and achievements

Norris was a six-time undefeated World Professional Middleweight Karate Champion between 1968 and 1974 before transitioning into acting.

He gained international recognition in action films such as Missing in Action (1984), Code of Silence (1985), and The Delta Force (1986), often portraying military or law enforcement characters.

His television role as a Texas Ranger in Walker, Texas Ranger (1993–2001) further expanded his audience and established him as a mainstream television figure.

Norris made his film debut in 1973’s The Way of the Dragon, where he appeared alongside martial arts star Bruce Lee in a widely noted fight scene set in Rome.

Cultural impact

Beyond his film and television work, Norris became a widely recognised internet figure in the 2000s through the viral “Chuck Norris Facts” memes, which portrayed him as a near-mythical figure of strength and resilience.

He later appeared in The Expendables 2 (2012) alongside actors including Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Bruce Willis, reinforcing his status among action film icons.

Early life

Born Carlos Ray Norris on March 10, 1940, in Oklahoma, he was the eldest of three brothers. After his parents divorced, the family moved to California.

He enlisted in the US Air Force in 1958 and began studying martial arts while stationed in South Korea, later building a career as an instructor before entering the film industry.

Reactions

Tributes followed from political figures and public personalities. Texas Governor Greg Abbott described Norris as “a legend,” while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called him “a great friend of Israel.”

Actor Sylvester Stallone said he “had a great time working with Chuck,” describing him as “All American in every way.”

Context

Norris remained a prominent public figure in later years, known both for his entertainment career and his political views, which drew both support and criticism.

Why it matters

Norris’s career reflects the rise of martial arts in mainstream Western cinema and the global popularity of action films in the late 20th century.

His transition from athlete to actor and later cultural icon illustrates the broader influence of media, celebrity, and internet culture across generations.
