LONDON (Realist English). For decades, space exploration was the exclusive domain of superpowers and billionaires. Today, that landscape is shifting.
Eighteen African countries have now launched at least one satellite, up from just a handful a decade ago, with more than 21 now running dedicated space programmes, according to the Africa Center for Strategic Studies.
By early 2026, African nations had launched roughly 69 satellites in total, with projections for at least eight more by year’s end.
The global space race has intensified in recent years, driven by geopolitical rivalry between major powers like the US and China for commercial dominance and resource control. Cheaper, reusable rockets from private providers like SpaceX and Blue Origin have driven down the cost of reaching orbit, fuelling the race further. Now African nations are entering the fray too, crowding an already competitive field and reshaping what global space ambition looks like.
Who leads and who joins
Egypt, South Africa, Algeria, Nigeria and Morocco lead the pack in satellite infrastructure and technology, with major domestic labs for assembling, integrating and testing satellites. Egypt also hosts the headquarters of the newly launched African Space Agency (AfSA) within the Egyptian Space City in Cairo. AfSA is an organ of the African Union, meaning each of the 55 member states is automatically part of this collective endeavour.
In recent years, Senegal, Rwanda, Djibouti and Zimbabwe have also launched their first satellites, expanding the phenomenon beyond historically more developed nations. Countries such as Botswana, Uganda and Angola are exploring satellite applications to support communications and resource management.
Why space? Sovereignty, data and survival
Sovereignty is the driving force. African nations want to cut their dependence on foreign and Western powers, particularly for geographical and environmental data. Buying high-resolution satellite imagery and communication bandwidth from abroad is expensive, and requests can be delayed or denied outright.
The practical applications are immediate and urgent. African satellites now track crop health, manage water resources and predict floods and droughts. They monitor illegal fishing, border security, piracy, illegal mining and deforestation. They are increasingly vital for bridging rural telecommunications gaps that terrestrial infrastructure cannot reach.
Senegal, Egypt and South Africa are especially keen to control their own data. As one observer put it, the growth is not simply about prestige — there are practical reasons behind Africa’s increasing interest in space.

Institutional framework: AfSA takes shape
One of the most symbolic milestones of recent years was the official inauguration of the African Space Agency at its headquarters in Cairo in 2025. Under the leadership of Dr Tidiane Ouattara, President of the African Space Council, AfSA’s mission is to eliminate duplication across the ecosystem and serve as the primary liaison for international partnerships.
In January 2026, AfSA and France’s CNES signed a Memorandum of Understanding committing to joint space‑based solutions, prioritising Earth observation, capacity‑building, and public‑private collaboration. The Africa‑EU Space Partnership Programme, worth €100 million, shares infrastructure and data, with further tie‑ups expected in climate monitoring and agriculture.
The economic calculus
Africa’s space economy is valued at $24.95 billion, but African governments have allocated only $828.37 million to the sector in 2026, according to consulting firm Space in Africa. The industry is projected to reach $39.52 billion by 2030 at a compound annual growth rate of 7.97%. Much of the industry’s revenue comes from telecommunications operators and companies that turn satellite data into commercial services.
In July 2026, the second Space Forum Africa opened in Lomé, Togo, bringing space agencies, startups and development banks together to discuss financing. Development finance institutions, including the West African Development Bank (BOAD), participated. Much of Africa’s space funding is classified under other sectors — satellite imagery is used in climate adaptation, smart agriculture, land registry, customs enforcement and transport monitoring.
Structural challenges: no launch pads, limited budgets, skills gaps
Despite the progress, obstacles persist.
- No launch facilities. As of February 2026, no operational orbital launch facility exists anywhere on the African continent. Every African satellite launched to date has relied on foreign rockets — primarily SpaceX Falcon 9 rideshares from the US, but also vehicles from Europe, China, Russia or Japan. This dependence means African space programmes must compete for rideshare slots, accept whatever launch windows become available, navigate export controls, and pay premium rates that drain scarce foreign exchange.
- Budget constraints. Public budgets remain far lower than in the West, leaving many programmes reliant on external loans and donor‑tied packages. Weak local venture capital markets mean startups often struggle to raise funds.
- Skills and brain drain. Despite growing investment in local talent, skills gaps and brain drain remain stubborn problems. However, new aerospace engineering and data science programmes aim to keep young technical talent on the continent.
- Ground infrastructure. Limited ground stations restrict the download and processing of real‑time satellite data.
Kenya is moving to address the launch infrastructure gap: the Kenya Space Agency has extended deadlines for bids inviting partnership for construction of a commercial spaceport.
Geopolitical implications: a new player at the table
Africa’s space rise could push Europe to shed its role as paternalistic aid provider and become more of an equal partner. European firms could gain a foothold in Africa’s fast‑growing commercial space economy, unlocking opportunities beyond saturated Western markets. But Africa’s space ambitions also sharpen the need for Europe to deepen its diplomatic and geopolitical ties on the continent, as rivals China and Russia expand their own space partnerships there.
The continent is no longer merely participating in the space race; it is defining its own path with clarity, purpose, and accelerating capability. From the operationalisation of the African Space Agency to ambitious lunar aspirations and the maturation of commercial ventures, 2026 is proving to be a landmark year.
An ambitious but uncertain trajectory
Africa’s entry into the space race is not about prestige — it is about sovereignty, survival and economic opportunity. The continent is building its own satellites, launching payloads to the ISS, and eyeing the Moon, all while cutting reliance on foreign powers.
Yet the structural constraints are formidable: no launch pads, limited budgets, skills shortages and dependence on foreign rockets. The question is not whether Africa will join the space race — it already has. The question is whether African nations can translate these ambitions into sustainable capabilities, or whether they will remain perpetual riders on other people’s rockets, watching their data from the ground while others control the skies.
For now, the trajectory is upward. But in space, as on Earth, momentum is not the same as destiny.
