MOSCOW (Realist English). Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are at risk unless urgent action is taken to reverse demographic decline. In a recent interview, Putin described population growth as critical to Russia’s future.
“For a great power with such territory and ambitions, 150 million people is not enough,” he said. “If the population doesn’t grow, we won’t be able to hold the country.”
Putin emphasized that improving demographics is one of the most fundamental challenges of the coming decades. He framed the issue not just as a social priority, but as a strategic imperative tied to national security and state resilience.
The Kremlin is increasingly centering its domestic agenda around boosting birth rates and supporting families. Officials view demographic trends as directly linked to Russia’s ability to maintain control over its vast territory.
Amid shrinking workforce numbers and limited migration inflows, the Kremlin’s message is clear: without a stronger internal demographic base, Russia will face long-term vulnerability. Expect further incentives for large families, expansion of maternity capital programs, and increased public spending on family support infrastructure.
