WASHINGTON (Realist English). U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday that his administration would allow 600,000 Chinese students to study in the United States — more than double the current figure — in a move that marks a significant shift in tone toward Beijing.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump dismissed suggestions that Washington planned to restrict Chinese student visas. “I hear so many stories about we’re not going to allow their students … to come in. We’re going to allow their students to come in. It’s very important, 600,000 students,” he said. Trump added that his administration intended to “get along good” with China and reiterated that President Xi Jinping had invited him to visit the country.
The statement came just hours after the Chinese embassy in Washington issued a notice urging students to “be cautious when choosing” Houston as their port of entry. The embassy said “numerous Chinese students” had recently faced “unjustifiable questioning and harassment” at George Bush Intercontinental Airport, including the inspection of their electronic devices.
Trump’s comments signal a more conciliatory stance toward Beijing at a time of heightened scrutiny of Chinese nationals in the U.S., particularly in education and technology sectors.
