Bystander disarms gunman during Bondi Beach attack, is hailed as hero

SYDNEY (Realist English). An Australian bystander who tackled and disarmed one of the attackers during a deadly shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach has been widely praised as a hero by officials and the public, after video of the incident spread across social media.

Australian media identified the man as Ahmed al-Ahmad, 43, a Muslim civilian who intervened during the attack on Sunday, in which 11 people were killed at a Jewish holiday event. According to his family, al-Ahmad was shot in the arm and shoulder while confronting the gunman and is currently undergoing surgery, though he is expected to make a full recovery.

Footage verified by Reuters shows al-Ahmad running toward an armed man carrying a rifle, tackling him from behind and forcibly taking the weapon. The video then shows the gunman retreating toward a nearby bridge, where at least one other shooter was positioned, as the bystander places the rifle on the ground.

Reuters confirmed that the individuals in the footage match those later seen surrounded by police, based on clothing and other visual details.

Al-Ahmad’s cousin, Mustafa al-Ahmad, told Australian media that the family learned of his actions through social media. “He’s a hero. One hundred percent a hero,” he said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the intervention in a public address, describing footage of a civilian disarming one of the attackers and potentially saving many lives. His remarks were made before the man’s identity had been publicly confirmed.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns called the incident “the most unbelievable scene I’ve ever seen,” saying the bystander’s actions likely prevented further bloodshed. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also commended civilians who “ran toward danger in order to help others,” calling their actions heroic.

Police said one suspected gunman was killed at the scene and another was left in critical condition. Authorities are continuing to investigate whether a third attacker was involved.
