Google cuts over 100 design roles as focus shifts to AI investment

SAN FRANCISCO (Realist English). Google has laid off more than 100 employees in design-related roles, including teams in its cloud business, as the company intensifies cost-cutting measures to redirect resources toward artificial intelligence infrastructure, CNBC reported.

According to internal documents, affected groups include the cloud unit’s “quantitative user experience research” and “platform and service experience” teams, as well as adjacent units. The cuts have halved some of Google Cloud’s design teams, many of which were based in the United States. Some employees were told they have until early December to find other roles within the company.

Google has not issued a public comment on the layoffs. Business Insider first reported that certain cloud positions were eliminated.

The company has been reducing staff across departments throughout the year. Since January, Google has offered voluntary exit packages to employees in human resources, hardware, search, ads, marketing, finance and commerce, and eliminated more than a third of its managers overseeing small teams. The firm has also encouraged wider adoption of AI tools in day-to-day work.

Chief executive Sundar Pichai told staff earlier this year that Google would need “to be more efficient as we scale up so we don’t solve everything with headcount.”

The restructuring follows similar moves by other tech giants. Microsoft laid off 9,000 employees in July, while Meta has also carried out significant staff reductions.
