Georgia’s Marjorie Taylor Greene to resign from Congress after rift with Trump

WASHINGTON (Realist English). Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, one of the most polarizing figures in US politics, announced on Friday that she will step down from Congress in January — a stunning end to a five-year career defined by controversy, influence, and, ultimately, a public split with President Donald Trump.

Greene revealed her decision in a social-media statement, just days after Trump denounced her as a “traitor” and signaled support for a primary challenger in her Georgia district. She said she wanted to spare her constituents a bitter intra-party fight and predicted Republicans would likely lose the House majority in the upcoming midterms.

“I have too much self-respect and dignity, love my family too much, and do not want my sweet district to endure a hateful primary against me by the President we all fought for,” Greene said.

Her resignation caps a tumultuous tenure that saw her stripped of committee assignments early in her first term, removed from the Freedom Caucus after internal feuds, and repeatedly condemned for incendiary rhetoric — even as she emerged as one of Trump’s most influential allies on Capitol Hill.

Greene told CNN she has faced escalating death threats since her break with the president. In the same interview, she expressed regret for years of “toxic” political language, acknowledging its impact on a country grappling with rising political violence.

A person close to Greene said she has been considering resignation for more than a week. She currently has no plans to run for another office, despite previous speculation about a Senate bid.

Her recent criticism of Trump — including accusations that he was prioritizing foreign policy over domestic issues — deepened the rift. She also broke with the White House over expiring Affordable Care Act subsidies and clashed with officials over the handling of the sealed Jeffrey Epstein case files, ultimately helping push through a transparency measure Trump signed this week.

Representative Thomas Massie, one of Greene’s closest allies, praised her departure. “She embodies what a true Representative should be,” he wrote.

Her exit creates immediate complications for Speaker Mike Johnson, whose narrow Republican majority will shrink further, intensifying pressure on the leadership as key legislation approaches in the new year.

Once known for promoting conspiracies and inflammatory claims — including false suggestions that mass school shootings were staged — Greene in recent days even offered rare praise for former Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi, calling her “very impressive” in her ability to manage her party.

The White House has not yet commented on Greene’s resignation.
