Kremlin envoy criticises UK and EU over Greenland dispute with US

MOSCOW (Realist English). Russia’s special presidential envoy for investment and economic cooperation Kirill Dmitriev has accused the United Kingdom and the European Union of failing to recognise or correct their strategic mistakes, including in the territorial dispute with the United States over Greenland.

In a post on X written in English, Dmitriev said the EU and the UK were relying on rhetoric rather than strategic reassessment. “The EU/UK are doing what they do best — rhetoric and monitoring the situation. And they are not doing what they have never done: acknowledging, analysing and correcting their strategic miscalculations,” he wrote, adding that such an approach “is not a winning strategy.”

His comments came after US President Donald Trump announced new trade measures linked to Greenland. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Washington would impose a 10% import tariff on goods from the United Kingdom, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Finland, France and Sweden.

According to Trump, the tariffs will take effect on February 1 and remain in place until agreements are reached on what he described as the “complete and total acquisition” of Greenland by the United States. He added that the tariff rate would rise to 25% from June 1 if no deal is reached.

Greenland is a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark and a strategic Arctic region that Trump has repeatedly described as vital to US national security. The tariff threat has already drawn sharp criticism from European governments, who have rejected any suggestion of transferring sovereignty over the island.

Dmitriev’s remarks reflect Moscow’s broader scepticism toward European strategic decision-making, as tensions rise between Washington and its European allies over trade, security and territorial issues linked to Greenland.
