MOSCOW (Realist English). President Vladimir Putin has said that Russia deliberately refrained from using nuclear weapons during the ongoing conflict with Ukraine and the West, warning that such a move could have triggered a global disaster.
“If we had struck back, it would have ended in nuclear war,” Putin stated in a new documentary by journalist Pavel Zarubin. “They tried to provoke us, but we didn’t take the bait.”
He emphasized that Russia possesses sufficient conventional military power to achieve its objectives. “I hope there will be no need to use such weapons. We have everything necessary to accomplish our goals,” the president added.
This is the first time Putin has publicly framed nuclear restraint as a deliberate strategic choice in the face of provocations by NATO. Western media have frequently raised concerns about possible nuclear escalation, particularly following cross-border strikes on Russia’s Belgorod and Kursk regions.
Putin’s comments serve as a message to military and diplomatic elites: despite confrontational rhetoric, Russia is maintaining a high nuclear threshold. For now, the risk of full-scale global conflict remains under control.
