MOSCOW (Realist English). Russia has accused the United States of committing an “act of armed aggression against Venezuela” following reports that US authorities seized Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife and removed them from the country.
In a statement released by the Russian Foreign Ministry, Moscow said the incident had caused “deep concern and condemnation,” arguing that the justifications cited by Washington were unfounded.
“The pretexts used to justify these actions are untenable. Ideological hostility has prevailed over pragmatic considerations, as well as any willingness to build relations based on trust and predictability,” the ministry said.
The Foreign Ministry described the detention and transfer of a sitting head of state and his spouse as an “unacceptable encroachment on the sovereignty of an independent state” and demanded that the situation be clarified “without delay.”
Moscow also called for steps to prevent further escalation around Venezuela, stressing that Latin America “must remain a zone of peace.” The statement reaffirmed Russia’s solidarity with the Venezuelan people and its support for the political course of the country’s Bolivarian leadership, which it said is aimed at defending national interests and state sovereignty.
